Event Detail

What does it look like when a diplomat, a photo-journalist when she looks at Delhi, its people and surroundings. Ms. Ann Aquilina the spouse of John Aquilina of High Commission of Malta to Delhi and Ambassador- delegate to Nepal. Today Ann is the President of the Association of the Spouses of the Heads of Missions in New Delhi, for 2015. This Association dates back to 1922. It was formed primarily to support the Spouses of Ambassadors and High Commissioners posted in Delhi.

At-home with Ms. Ann, Delhi Diary discovered a very sensitive and accomplished person in the garb of a diplomat. The lady had lost her hearing at the age of four and a decade back after a successful operation, the sound reverberated and she felt involved. Married for 9 years to the High Commissioner John Aquilina, agreed to give up her career and opted to be his security guard. Two years back, she came to India and today loves Varanasi in all its colors and sounds. She finds Delhi perfect except for its traffic but on second thought she welcomes traffic as then she gets a chance to chat up with her husband.

Delhi Diary suggested she go to Vasant Vihar from her residence at Panchsheel Park via Chandni Chowk. “Chandni Chowk is like life-full of things to do, people to watch, sights to see and some to ignore.”

She told us that her husband was learning Hindi-Kya baat hai and is an educationist and loves talking to school children about his immediate passion- education.

Ann is familiar with India, as she has visited it earlier in 1990, when she took a trip to Kashmir. The life of the spouse of a High Commissioner or an Ambassador can often be a difficult and lonely experience. Many spouses experience language difficulties, as well as estrangement from family members whom they have left behind. While the High Commissioners and Ambassadors are busy pursuing their professional responsibilities, the spouses are often faced with long periods of relative inactivity. This is particularly difficult for spouses who have sacrificed their own professional career in order to be with their High Commissioner or Ambassador husbands or wives.

Mrs Ann Aquilina is a journalistic photographer who ceased professional duties prior to Mr Aquilina’s appointment to New Delhi.
