Xin chào Vietnam

Event Detail

Vietnam – a country of beaches and heritage, is a must visit for everyone. It has the world’s most spectacular cave systems in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. Amalgamating with fun loving and energetic Vietnamese people is really easy. The food is exotic and totally different from its neighboring countries.

On the 70th anniversary of Vietnam National Day (2 September 1945 – 2 September 2015), Delhi Diary interviewed Ambassador Ton Sinh Thanh

1. Please shed some light on India – Vietnam relation?
The links between Vietnam and India went back thousand years ago through trade and religious interactions. The foundation for the modern relationships between the two countries was laid by the great leaders President Ho Chi Minh and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who exchanged visits in 1954 and 1958. The two countries established formal diplomatic relations in 1972 and formed strategic partnership in 2007. Since then, the relations have been enhanced in many fields. The intensive exchange of visits by highest leaders has strengthened mutual political trust. The two countries have effective cooperation in the defense and security areas. India has become a top 10 trending partner of Vietnam and big investor in Vietnam. The two countries also have good cooperation in the areas of education, culture, science and technology.

2. How do you wish to promote Indian tourists in Vietnam?
Vietnam with many beautiful landscapes , natural and cultural heritages, historic relics, has becole a favborite destination for foreign tourists. Last year, Vietnam received nearly 8 millions of them.
With increasing income as a result of robust economic development, dozens millions of Indians are going abroad to spend their holidays. However, only 55, 000 Indian tourists visited Vietnam last year. Therefore, we are trying our best by organizing promotional activities such as roadshows, farmtrips in order to double or even triple the number of Indian tourists to Vietnam.

3. Please tell us something about the art and cultural history of Vietnam?
Vietnamese culture emerged from the tropical conditions and 4000 years of history, during which Vietnamese people had to fight against many invasions and at the same time absorbed many aspects of other countries’cultures both from the East and West. Therefore, the key identities of Vietnamese culture are characterized by spirit of village community, patriotism and openness. Vietnamese food culture tends towards vegetarianism with a lot of vegetables and fruits in the daily menu. Vietnamese most famous dishes include Pho (noodle soup) and spring rolls (fresh and fried). Vietnamese coffee is also a special drink that has some French influence. In terms of fashion, Äo Dai”dress has become a symbol of Vietnamese ladies while the way the Vietnamese men dress themselves is a clear borrow from the West. The traditional architecture of Vietnam is the curved roof, which is now mainly seen from the pagodas, while modern houses import aspects of different architectures in the world.
Traditional arts are reflected in the water – color Dong Ho paintings on “gio” papers, lacquerware paintings, very sophisticated carved furniture, many folk songs and local musical instruments. However , Vietnamese modern is strongly influenced by French oil paintings and music and Russian opera.

4. What do you think about Delhi?
I came back to Delhi in October last year after 7 years and I was surprised by the changes taken place here. The city looks cleaner, more beautiful. It has also become a modern city with many shopping malls, metro lines, nice bus – stops. I also love many other things in Delhi such as beautiful gardens, museums, historic relics.
