Message by H.E. Janez Premože, the Ambassador of the Republic of Slovenia to India

I would like to express my gratitude to have this opportunity to address Delhi Diary readers and to inform of the opening  of six  Slovenian Visa Application Centres, namely in  New Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai, all operated by our trusted partner VFS Global. Slovenia is a relatively small boutique country with exceptional natural beauty positioned in Mediterranean Central Europe between the Alps and Balkans, Adriatic Sea and Pannonian plains. Slovenians are hard working people proud of their industrial tradition. Historical, cultural and natural heritage are their true source of inspiration. Where else could you admire traditional forms of farm hay racks, Lipizzaner horses, local cuisine like potica cake, beehive panels and the Carniola bee, or challenge the intricacies of the Slovenian language or learn so many dialects in such a small geographical area? Or admire great names in culture (such as the architect Jože Plečnik, rock band Laibach or extravagant Neue Slowenische Kunst), major inventions (logarithms), numerous sports winners, national sports (mountaineering, skiing, and running) all surrounded by the unspoilt natural beauty.

This year we had an exchange of the significant official visits on both sides. The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Economic Development and Technology Radovan Žerjav participated at the Business Summit in Agra. Bilateral trade between India and Slovenia has been growing steadily over the years. Our relations are poised to reach greater heights.  The stable democracy and open export oriented economy of Slovenia can provide tremendous opportunities for Indian businesses to export their products and also access other European markets. There is a great opportunity for investments in Slovenia on account of its geo-strategic location and low-risk business environment. In May, the Hon’ble Speaker of Lok Sabha Meira Kumar visited Slovenia where the parliamentarian delegation conversed with the President of the Slovenian National Assembly Janko Veber in Ljubljana.

I would also like to mention Slovenian environmentalist Matevž Lenarčič who became the first person to fly an ultra-light plane from Europe to America and back over the North Pole. He departed on April 22 and returned on May 27. The plane was equipped to measure air pollution over the North Pole - a hot-spot for global warming. While flying over the Arctic Lenarčič was surprised to note that temperatures on the actual North Pole were much higher than in the surrounding areas.

In conclusion, I would wholeheartedly welcome you in Slovenia either for business, tourism, sport or leisure.
